Understanding Mental Health and Neurodivergence

Mental health affects mood, sleep, energy, concentration, diet, and social interactions. When left unaddressed, it can affect daily life, work, and relationships. Common conditions include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Neurodivergence refers to natural differences in brain function, including attention, learning, sensory processing, and social interaction. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, can impact focus, organisation, and impulse control in both children and adults. Recognising and supporting neurodivergent individuals is an essential part of comprehensive mental health care.

Mental Health Services We Offer

We offer a full range of mental health services designed to support your wellbeing and provide practical, ongoing care. Our services include:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis: We take the time to understand your mental health, discuss any symptoms, and identify any underlying conditions that may be affecting your daily life.
  • Personalised Care Plans: We create structured, tailored plans that provide strategies and guidance to help you manage your mental health effectively and sustainably.
  • Medication Management: When necessary, we prescribe and monitor medications, ensuring treatments are safe, effective, and suited to your individual needs.
  • Ongoing Support and Monitoring: We regularly check in to review your progress, adjust your care plan if needed, and provide guidance to help you maintain mental wellbeing.
  • Referrals to Allied Health Professionals: If extra support is required, we can connect you with psychologists, counsellors, or other specialised mental health providers to ensure coordinated care.

Mental Health Care Plans (MHCPs)

At The Village GP Black Rock, we can arrange a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) under Australia’s Better Access Initiative to provide structured, personalised support for patients experiencing mental health challenges. With an MHTP we assess your mental health, develop a tailored plan to improve wellbeing and coping skills, and coordinate the involvement of allied‑health professionals such as psychologists or counsellors.

The plan enables you to access Medicare‑rebated services for up to 10 individual sessions and up to 10 group sessions in a calendar year. We’ll review your plan regularly so the care remains effective and suited to your ongoing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Access to Medicare rebates requires a valid Medicare card. If you do not have one, you may still be able to access services privately. Please contact our clinic for more information on private billing options.
During a review, your GP will assess your progress, discuss any changes in your symptoms, and determine if adjustments to your care plan are necessary. This review is essential to continue accessing Medicare rebates for additional sessions.
Yes, a referral from your GP is required to access services under an MHCP. This ensures coordinated care and eligibility for Medicare rebates. From November 1, 2025, the referral must come from your usual medical practitioner or a GP at your MyMedicare registered practice.

Most individuals experiencing mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or stress, are eligible for an MHCP. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from one. If you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s worth discussing a plan with your GP.
